Hey guys,

I bought a 2020 model MT-09 SP October last year and left it in winter storage almost immediately after purchase. During the winter I made several modifications to the bike, to mention some of them:

  • Changed blinkers to Yamaha LED plus blinker both front and rear.
  • Installed Heated grips
  • Installed Yamaha original USB port.
  • Changed the exhaust to full arrow exhaust.

Two days ago I tried starting the bike to listen to the new exhaust and the bike will not start. I attached a video of the issue.
It is probably worth mentioning that I have tried charging the battery over night but unfortunately that did not help. In the video you can see that I do not have a lot of gas in the tank, I have also tried filling up the tank but that did not help either.

Has anyone else had this issue or any ideas on how I can try to get it running?

Putting a bike that's left in cold storage for months on end almost guarantees starting problems. Buy a decent battery charger/ tender and leave it connected to the bike at all times. Simples.

Fuel stabilizer? Was it parked with ethanol blended fuel? Ethanol blended fuels absorb moisture and will go bad rapidly in cold weather. Fuel stabilizer helps usually.

While it is turning over pretty well, the battery is definitely a bit weak.

I had this problem too after storing over winter. The 3-year old stock battery had tanked even with a tender hooked up. A new battery and she started right up. Yours is trying real hard to start - you can hear the gas is getting to the fuel injection system - but it sounds like it just can't turn over fast enough to fire.

All above are valid points to check:

Battery: Get a GOOD battery tender to recover the battery if it was not stored with one. It is possible to revive a dead battery, depending on how dead it is, but you must get a quality battery tender. A regular trickle charger will keep it charged, but does not have the logic/electronics to resuscitate.

Fuel: If you did not use a fuel stabilizer... or specially in your case, you stored it empty ( NEVER STORE IT EMPTY ), moisture has built up inside the tank and it settles to the bottom. The pump is pumping water into the fuel lines and so it won't start. Fill up the tank immediately, this will at least slosh the fuel water mixture, diluting it just enough to get it going. NEVER STORE EMPTY... didn't I say that already?

You can simply try to jump start it with a car battery.
Could be fuel. I'd drain it all and put new fuel into it. You can get rid of the old fuel by adding to your car gas tank and diluting it with new fresh gas.
One warning: I siphoned fuel from my FZ-09 and when pulling the vinyl hose out, noticed a strand of vinyl being peeled from the hose scraping against the underside of the fuel tank restricter hole, which has a sharp edge on its underside.
Not wanting that crap in my tank to clog the fuel pump, I took the tank off, removed the fuel pump and cleaned the tank out.
While I had it all apart, I used a dremel tool with a small cut-off wheel to cut out the restrictor in the top of the tank. Makes gassing up much easier. I can see the fuel in the tank. (Had to put a small spacer (a big coin) in to keep the Dremel cuttng consistent.)

BTW - When my battery died (from an alarm system draining it), I found a cheap Lithium battery for about $100 on Amazon (I think). Said it fit an FZ-09, but the posts were opposite. But the wires reached OK. That was over 4 years ago and It's been working fine since. (I took the alarm off. If I ever put it back on, I'll put an inline switch so I can turn it off when it's not in use so I don't wreck the battery)

You mentioned a new exhaust.
Did you buy chance remove the tank and ecu for a flash?
Reason I ask is because my 17 did exactly this, when I removed the tank, sent the ecu off, reinstalled and forgot to plug everything back in beneath the tank!
Might be a stupid reccomendation but check there!
