Steering damper/stabilizer options?

Are there any good options out there for us for a steering damper? In wheelie mode this thing can get a little scary. Maybe one could just fab a mount for the Ohlins damper?

There is this thing called a "search" for looking for topics that have been beaten to death many times over...

Front suspension is the same on both bikes.

If the GPR works on the XSR, everyone that rides hard should get one. Mine made my FZ-09 as stable as a ZX14. I never have it set higher than 5 out of 20 and it works perfectly. I turn it down a few clicks for casual / slow rides to make riding in traffic smoother. Worth the money.

I'm surprised by the number of 09 members who are looking for steering dampers. I live in an area where many of the "side roads" are in pretty poor condition and I believe I push the bike pretty well in the twisties and I don't feel any problems with stability or the feeling the front end needs something to settle it down. It's been my experience over the years that if the front and rear are set up correctly, the bike should be stable. I have had bikes in the past that were problematic with the ability to track correctly and it's usually a balance or wheel problem, or, a steering head bearing problem. I had an XS11 a few years ago and after doing everything I could to get it in good shape, the front end was just out of this world from a tracking/steering point. In the end, I took the front end off, checked the bearings and torque of the bearings. When I cleaned, greased and torqued the bearings to speck, it was entirely a different bike, so much so that I couldn't believe just cleaning, greasing and correctly torqueing the steering head bearings. If that steering head isn't perfect, it cn cause a lot of problems that a damper may just mask. In any event, use a damper if you have to but I'd check the steering head bearings just to make sure the factory got it right.

After having the bike and riding it with the gpr. All I have to say is everyone get one. The handling make the bike as responsive as my ducati was. Adds some weight to the steering feels less unstable even when pushing it. I also added lower bars. It drives like a proper sports bike now .

Hi all

sdelcegno bringing a relatively old thread back to life here, but can you tell me how much 'lift' or 'raise' the supplied GPR bar clamps give over the stock bar clamps please?

Am interested in doing this mod but have already bought a set of bar risers but not fitted them yet) so may push them on to get the GPR damper.

Thanks

Steve

Anyone tried one of the chinese GPR clones? They got positive reviews from the Tracer / FJ forum; the XSR is a lot more prone to headshake than the Tracer (riding position /extra weight over front?)

EDIT - I'm not sure these would work. there seem to be two types - this one
Steering Damper With Mounting Bracket for Yamaha FZ MT-09 Tracer FJ-09 2015 UK | eBay
which looks like it's designed for the tracer - the Tracer has higher risers, don't think this would fit under bars
and this one
Turning Stabilizer Steering Damper With Bracket FOR YAMAHA MT-09/FZ-09 2014-2016 | eBay
which sits on top of the yokes - but the supplied top yokes don't have the necessary tabs for the instrument cluster.

The first one would work with risers I guess.

Edit 2: tabs are on the bottom yoke, so second one would work if a trifle ugly. Less than a quarter of GPR price though!

I see there is a new kit on ebay for the FZ09. They have eliminated the stainless shaft in the aluminum block. It appears that the new mounting bolts to the frame where the steering shaft goes. I don't see this bolt in the parts fiche or in the service manual. I'm not sure if there will be enough clearance between this mounting point and the center fuel tank cover.
