Please don't take this the wrong way, but that body position going the wrong way, is going to get you in trouble sooner or later. Correct body position in that corner could probably reduce your lean angle at least 10 to12 degrees and get you around the same corner just as fast or faster.....with a whole lot more tire surface on the road.
I agree 100%. And yes, that is not this Canuk :icon_joker:

What I don't get is these supermoto dudes and how they defy this principle:

All the makings of "Looking good!" Killboy.com photo.
When I googled the picture - that's exactly what I thought! Just some dude lookin goofy for killboy.

They learned the technique from Flat track racing. Body position more upright, inside arm straight, outside elbow up and bent, leg out to counter balance.

That's exactly why I said I was doing that on the street on the FZ after riding my dirt bike. Cornering a dirt bike is different. You want to get on top of the bike for better control of slides. :icon_thumright:

From what I recall (I still supermoto occasionally), the guys I race with come from either dirtbike or Sportbike disciplines. However u see them using both techniques. Hanging off and counter leaning depending on the corner speed, and the surface. Our tracks are laid out with combined sections of dirt, asphalt, and concrete. We also have tabletop jumps.

It's designed to give neither discipline an advantage except with the jumps, so everyone learns to jump and the tire combinations are whatever the rider desires.

However I choose to combine hanging off with 'leg out' to reduce my counter leaning angle in the dirt sections and so far I've had a podium finish which I'm proud of for my age and untrained background (lol)

I probably look funny doing it but it's some of the best fun I've had racing my buddies n then lived to brag about it

I don't use a tire to gauge my lean angle - too many variables. I use my knee slider to tell me how much room I have left, if that gets pinched between the bike and the road, I'm out! :)

Here's my rear Dunlop Q3 after last weekends ride. Bike now has just under 500 miles on it, about 400 or so on these tires.

Wow!!!!

Most bikes I run on Palomar I would get all the tire on the 1st pass, including a bone stock FZ 09 with OEM Dunlops.

The most recent bike added to The Stable may be a bit more difficult .

It has a big meat 200 Pirelli on the back with pretty steep sides.

I have a couple of bikes that may still have a quarter inch left on Pirelli tires.

Had been waiting for this bike for about 6 months.

My luck to catch a cold and my right knee gets a bit stiff 2 days before arrival..

Hope to have it on The Hill next weekend.

Still about 1 inch of chicken as I rode the bike straight home from the dealer last night , and to the scale this morning.

The bike is very smooth on the road and I don't anticipate doing much of anything to it other than adjust the foot pegs.

This style is intended to slide the bike around the corner on purpose. Works we'll on dirt and sharp corners. Not so well on 400# plus sport bikes.

Dolan, gotta hand it to you man, at least you ain't tooling around the country in a Winnebago. Glad to see someone spending their money on worthwhile things. Nice bike! Watch out, they will take it away if you are going too fast...

This foot out technique also shifts weight forward a bit more. When you see GP guys doing it, its because they are looking for a little more front end feel.

I have never tried to measure my chicken strips and since the outer edge seems to be rather blurry, it would be rather difficult, however, I have always seemed to wear them down unevenly (more right side wear than left). That seems to make sense since I don't spend a lot of time on twisty roads and most of my riding involves commuting and running errands around town where freeway on and off ramps are almost always right turns and oncoming traffic on surface streets often makes me stop or slow down before turning left, but I seldom have to slow for right turns.

Do what feels comfortable... Eventually your comfort level will narrow out the chicken strips... Its not easy scrubbing a 180 tire off the track if you live in an area with few twisties ... Im sure the peanut gallery will chime in about scrubbing the edges in a parking lot... But dont leave your comfort zone in an effort to "appear more skilled" by not having strips... Some of the best moto racers in the world have chicken strips, as you ride more and more you will see them diminish naturally because your comfort in leaning increases.

Just wondering if anyone uses the wear on the rear tire as a gauge to how far you are leaning the bike in the turns?
Last weekend and this weekend great riding finally. Only 760 miles and I feel more comfortable with the handling compared to my 08 SV650.

Lol those chicken strips look like mying and i get excellent moderate high speed turns completed without any scares or issues. I always check my tires and pressure before heading out on a ride through the canyons near me. Don't worry about others ideas on tire wear. Remember these dummies aren't paying your medical bills if you crash Think about that.....
