most motorcycles require a service at 600 miles. So what's the magic in that number 600? There are so different many different bikes out there but it seems that they all have that same requirement.

Shakedown, oil change, warranty/recall review, dealer traffic, etc.

IMHO always good to get an oil change after initial engine break in, some advocate frequent oil changes during short intervals during the break in process but that also gets you into the different theories of/methods of break in...

Not unusual to see first service for bikes around the 500mi mark.

Its just a number they pick to decide when its time to get you into the dealership and charge you a few hundred dollars for an oil change and sell you some other crap they carry

Change your own oil and look the bike over, that's all they do anyway.

Harley is 1000 miles...they want about $400.00 for a first service...My Sportster had 1000 miles on it 2 weeks after I bought it....why would I to spend $400.00 to service a 2 week old bike?

Victory is 500 miles....

Most cars have no real "first service' to speak of. just an oil change at 5000 miles or whatever the factory interval is.

Because auto companies have recognized that vehicles have become dispensable... Once they make the sale, they want your service money, and the more the better.... Think about it, if they teach you that you only have to change the oil every 7500 or 10,000 miles because your using synthetic guess what, synthetic oil does nothing to remove the carbon build up or foreign material, and if you change your oil 10 - 15 times in 100,000 miles, your engine is junk by then.....

"Sorry Sir, your engine has failed, we'll put in a new one for ya - will be about $5-10K.
There is no way around it, and people buy into the idea that auto companies have been pushing and selling them for a long time.

"With Synthetic you don't need to change your oil as often." Bullspit

It called marketing.....

Change your oil regularly and often....

My regiment -

500 miles, then every 3000.
I might start moving towards every 5000 though.

Stuff vibrates loose on motorcycles. A good service shop will torque most of the hardware on the bike, change the oil, adjust the chain & levers, and make sure everything is attached and with an ECU controlled bike...they might plug in a computer I don't know. I'm not opposed to them making money, but the first service is way overpriced imo.

600 miles is about 1000 kilometers. I'm guessing that they converted the nice round 1000 to 600 for us non-metric heathens.
