I find it acts as a bit of a heat shield when stopped, by stopping your leg from coming in direct contact with the right side engine case.

Japs do not do anything for no reason. You right. If they wouldn't have thought about it we would be reading here complaints about clutch comes without any heat protection.....

PS patience is one of the greatest virtues.

We decided it's probably a sound suppressor. If so, again, it's better off sitting at the bottom of your toolbox, because the motor sounds better without it.

The FZ-09 and FJ-09 don't have any plastic cover there. They don't need it, and neither does the XSR900.

Not on the FZ & FJ because they do not have a Slipper Clutch like the XSR???

Just wondering if the Slipper Clutch is noisy on the XSR, which is why they added this cover?

I am wondering why Yamaha would add cost to the bike with a part that was not deemed fairly necessary or had a significant cosmetic effect. It just seems odd that on a "budget" bike that they would add this additional part. They have recycled most of the bike from existing models. Even the tail light came from the Bolt. That said, I'm hesitant to loose the cover based on nothing more then my understanding of economics, profit motive and a belief that Yamaha would not add cost to a bike unless it resulted in a tangible benefit. Anyways, interested in the longer-term reports from the guys who removed the cover.

Just be warned, it doesn't take much to scratch up the engine cases, and frame sliders alone will do nothing to help protect the cases. Only proper engine case sliders will help. Lots of FZ and FJ owners have learned this the hard way after installing frame sliders and no case sliders.

Some example off Google of scratched up and broken cases, and it's just a matter of time for the same picture of XSR's to start showing up on Google.

These ones are most likely from minor tip overs.

And an example of a bike taking a little road nap.

A link to one of the better kits to protect your XSR900, for a great price of just $289.95 for everything.

It seems we've narrowed it down to 3 purposes and 2 unintended consequences.

1. Sound suppression
2. Heat shielding
3. Damage protection
4. Styling fail
5. Internet fodder

To minsk99's point: I'll certainly report back any notable observations. Hopefully, none in regard to #3. ;)

I may be missing something here but it seems that $300 to protect things of
a lesser value according to http://www.partsfish.com/oemparts/a/yam/5715067387a8661278a0519d/crankcase-cover-1 all one is getting is the ability to ride away from a moderate low-side if no other serious damage is incurred.
Then, if aesthetics are an issue, the protectors need to be replaced for another $300.
Now, if the case covers were $300 a pop...oh yeah, certainly a good investment.
I am actually a bit surprised at the low price of the parts listed.
Please correct me if my logic is flawed.

hi again, i was rwally hesitating to remove the cover for good...so i give it a chance, based on if I was going to be able to save with some art and patience....
so here is the result:

Considering it will be seen with some distance, i believe the result is quite decent. :)

tools used: standler permanent black marker 0.4 mm and a cutter to correct little mistakes.

Yeah makes sense to me. Those parts are astonishingly cheap actually. Especially when considering the plastic fuel tank cover goes for $188...
