motorock, do you mean your key isn't releasing the seat? Might be something for the dealer to take care of.

The key releases the lock. But after that I am not able to easily pull off the seat. I give up usually and let it be..but soon, have to add more electrical stuff to the battery plus would like to carry the disc lock under the seat!

 

I just pull up on the back with my other hand when I use the key. Also, I removed the strap and made sure that the fasteners were lined up.

 

I don't recall of another forum member reporting the problem. Can you tell where the seat won't come off?

@V2Bob, the seat unlocks but seems to be stuck from the center towards the fuel tank..i can't seem to be able to lift it up the rear- almost feels like I may just break it!
in the one week that I have had the bike, I have opened it about 4 times...all on the first day itself to fit a gorilla alarm.

 

Try this........as you release the lock mechanism with the key, use your other hand to grab the very back of the seat and not only put some "lifting pressure" on the seat, but as you are lifting, pull the seat towards the rear of the bike. Sorry, that's the best I got!

 

Like others have said...it's a backward motion rather than lifting up.

 

I noticed that if you take off the 2 metal hooks on the seat sides, the seat is still just as firmly attached but goes on/off a lot easier. They don't even make contact when the seat is latched down. Those hooks would only make contact if someone was pulling up hard on the strap.

 

I take mine off several times a day, I can't bring my phone into the building so I store it underneath the seat...definitely need to pull backwards and once it moves lift up. Good luck!

 

I don't know if it is a Yamaha thing, but on my fz6r when I turn the key I have to keep it turned until I pull/grab the seat off, if not it only wiggles but it doesn't detach completely.

my only issue is getting it back on, and feeling that I've put it on securely.

 

The rubber feet the seat rests on are quite close to the plastic cover in the back. So for me it's a bit of an up and back move to get it off.
Revers for putting the seat on. The hooks and rubber feet seem to be a bit at odds with each other

 

I had an issue with mine the other day, but it was because I was pulling it straight up. If you pull the seat back and then up after turning the key, it pops off easily.

 

So, I managed to get it open!
My new technique- turn key, lift seat off the lock and then with open palms or bottom of fists firmly hit the two ends of the rider's portion of the seat. The motion should be from front to the back of the bike. This pops the seat open immediately which springs out of whatever is holding it down. Its definitely the oddest way I have had to employ to open a motorcycle seat!

When you say riders portion what do you mean… first rider or pillion ? My seat is stuck and it seems the back latch isn’t letting go

 

Glad you posted this. I pop-ed the seat many times and this morning i'm having this issue myself... gonna have to try the key turn, front to back and up technique...

 

When I picked mine up at the dealer, they had issues getting it lined up and back on, so far I have not had that problem.

 

An update: after having removed the seat lock mechanism and latch bracket and then reinstalling, i noticed that the lock arm didn't always connect to the spring loaded latch... sometimes just grazing it instead. If i pushed the key towards the front on the bike it would engage, but any pressure towards the back and it would miss. Repositioning the lock mechanism as far as it would go towards the tail, bending the tip of the lock arm slightly back and making sure the seat latch was as far forward on its mounting plate as it could go... fixed the problem. Now the lock arm makes proper contact with the sliding latch... yay!
So if you're having problems with removing your seat, it just might be an alignment issue... not the user! HTH

 

When turning the key, push down on the back of the seat to relieve pressure on the lock. Then pull up and backwards.

If that doesn't work, prying up and unbolting is the last option. I know, I had to do this twice now.

 

The next time you have the seat off, check to see if the seat latch slides back when you turn the key. Mine would only work with forward pressure on the key because the arm on the lock body was not lining up correctly. I made the adjustments per my "update" post to correct it. On a new bike i would consider this a warranty issue. If you aren't mechanically inclined, get your dealer to look at it. The seat pops off easily now with an up and then back motion.

 

Had the same problem, is this the first time trying to detach it? When I bought my bike they actually ran the positive cable wrong and it got caught, it was te first thing I tried to remove and was like WTF??? Maybe that helps.

 

Make sure you put the seat back on correctly, my fz6 used to go on with the front latch pulled up over the hook and It would bind when you took it off, I did have a problem with the fz6 seat it was sometimes a pain, no problem yet with 9

 

An old thread, I know, but I just had the same problem. Latch unlocks the seat but then something is still preventing it from sliding backwards and it doesn't want to let go. It has worked correctly before this. Wiggling the seat while swearing works but is not ideal. I tried taking the strap off to see if it was in the way but no difference. Lots of stuff under there but nothing looked obvious. Trying to diagnose the problem is like trying to see if the fridge light turns off when the door is closed. Oh well--still new--dealer's problem.

see jcfrayne's post above - if you install the seat with the front piece over the tank bracket instead of under it, the seat will bind when you try to remove it. it's happened to me a few times.

if you can pull up the front part of the seat more than a few mm, that's the problem. to get it off, you'll need to apply some force down on the middle part of the seat (you'll need to bend the seat pan a little) while turning the key and pulling the seat back.

 

Mine is a little sticky, but I find if you pull it back and up, it comes off easier. I did notice it started to stick a bit after installing the R&G Racing Tail Tidy kit. I get a feeling the latch under the seat isn't quite in the same spot it use to be. One of these days I will mess with it and see if it fixes the sticky seat syndrome.

There should be a little adjustment in the seat lock bracket position.

 

I also have found of late when trying to unlock the seat I find I am able to push the key barrel upwards & it is missing the arm on the seat release latch, looking at the problem with the seat removed I could see the whole under tray can be lifted if the key barrel is pushed upwards & it misses the seat latch lever, my fix was a penny washer to hold the tray down problem all gone now.

This is the problem area that can be lifted up & miss aligns the lock & catch.



There was no washer securing the parts together.



My solution fitting a penny washer.

 

Just went out to the garage to try mine...while standing on the left side of the bike and using my right hand using the key and unlock the latch and then use the left hand and grab the right rear CORNER of the seat slightly pull up then BACK ... worked everytime !
