Is that a crack or just a casting blemish?

 

Hard to tell exactly from the pic, but that sure looks like the beginning of a hairline crack. Can you tell if it's just the paint, or does it look like that bolt was over torqued during assembly? I just checked mine thoroughly, and see nothing similar to yours-mines a '14 BTW. Keep us posted...

 

Well it looks like the paint was done over the top of it . I'd like to think its a casting blemish but being that it's exactly where an over torque issue would result ,has me suspicious.

 

Judging by how almost everything on this bike was over torqued during assembly, it wouldn't surprise me. Keep an eye on it, keep us posted, and stay safe...

 

Mine has something that looks to be same on the RH above the front bolt... I can catch a fingernail on it ...

 

Just looked at mine... Mine is flawless, the casting is perfectly smooth.

 

You could get it checked out with dye penetrant. If it's a surface blemish, it would not penetrate and pass the test. Any kind of a crack would fail.

 

I just looked at my bike, I have a similar fault/crack on the right side forward bolt. Calling the dealer in a bit, and if I have time I will run it down this afternoon.

Might end up with a new FJ after all.

I have the exact same thing. I Assumed It To be a gouge from A socket.... NOW you have me worried

 

 

It's hard to imagine that a series of castings like that would make it past quality control. Interesting.

Are these 2014s and 2015s....? I see several are 2015s.

Yeah, my castings on both sides are perfectly smooth. I hope this is just an imperfection, not a structural issue.

 

On further inspection, my casting/bolts look significantly different than theses photos. On the surface, they appear the same, maybe it is just the photos, but that recess and the bolt head thickness seem quite different on my early 2014.

 

Care to post a picture?? I'm a little upset over this. Can't imagine how difficult a replacement would be.

 

I can try to get it... It looks like my bolt heads are much thicker, much more rounded. Maybe insignificant, but could point to a change in the process/part.

 

Looks similar to mine, will be keeping an eye on this as it develops. If this weakens the frame Yamaha will have a very embarrassing widespread recall. On mine it feels like a crack in the mold and the blemish in the frame actually protrudes in the 4 dark spots in the picture and catches my fingernail on it. I always thought the frame looked cheap anyway, the way the just harshly filed off the edges of it in certain spots.

Filed off edges? Man, I inspected the heck out of mine today, and cannot find any portion that is not silky smooth? Where are your filed edges? My frame appears flawless, it is very high quality, not a single mark in it... I'm actually really impressed!

I wonder if Yamaha switched up their casting supplier?

Yeah, in photos, it appears that the bolt heads can look thinner... depending on the angle.

 

Would think it not being a bolt issue if any !

Not to keep beating the horse here, but to me that doesn't look like a casting imperfection and the paint/ powder coat is far too thin for the fracture to be only in the paint. I really hope I'm wrong, but it's pretty troubling for those affected. The casting is pretty thin on these frames to keep the weight and costs down...idk

If the bolts had changed, it could indicate a change in manufacture. It isn't about the bolt, it is about the process.

Just like when Triumph stopped clear coating over their decals... At that time, the pearl white paint changed as well, and replacement parts no longer matched the OEM color.

It wasn't about the decal, that didn't change the paint...but the process as a whole changed.

 

My '15 has something similar but it looks like a moron tightened the bolt and just scratched the frame while removing the wrench.

I may be mistaken, but it appears to be on yours too. It's a little hard to tell by your picture, but look closely at the top radius above your forward right hand side mounting bolt recess.
