Looks like there may be an 04 version now? Lots of parts sites still show -03 but some are updating to -04 now.

Just looked and there is indeed 04 version listed for my 2014. I've already replaced the part twice myself, and I don't think they were 04's. Not really feeling like doing it again, but I definitely hear the tick.

 

There was no recall. Period.

There have only been two recalls.

One for faulty shift shafts in the 2015. One for faulty wiring harness on some 2014s.

No recall was ever issued for the CCT

What is the installation process for an updated OEM CCT? I don't think I have any issues with my 2015 (4600 miles), but I'd rather be proactive and upgrade to a newer revision.

Looking at the service manual, it seems to refer to some part/tool that looks like a bolt. Is it possible to install and properly adjust w/o removing the engine covers to see when the adjuster makes contact?

If I remember correctly, part #2 will come already inside the tensioner when you receive the part. It does the initial adjustment, and you will remove it afterwards.

I've replaced the part twice on mine and never removed the engine cover.

 

I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would spend more money on Yamaha CCTs. Just buy a manual tensioner and be done with it.

Instead of making a new thread I figured I'd post here.
Bought a used FZ09 with 5800 miles on it last week, sounds like the CCT is bad, or I'm just paranoid.
Since I bought it used, I don't really have a baseline of what normal sounds like (although the plethora of videos on this issue help).
At the time of this filming the bike was warm (170+ Degrees) and I had just shut it off 15 seconds prior to this video so you can hear the start up sound.
The bike has an Akra exhaust, so I'm sorry if that makes it a little hard to hear.

I'm also sorry for the vertical video, it bothers me too.

 

I don't hear it either. It will make a little noise at start-up but will then dissipate.

So is that just the clutch basket? I get some good sound at 4k as well when I'm i gear.

 

I didn't hear the tell tale tick... just the clutch. But it is a video, so audio sucks

I'm at work now, but when I get home I'll see if I feel any vibration through the allen key. Either way I'll probably do what everyone else has done and get the APE tensioner to feel better

 

So I just went out and manually adjusted my CCT to the point of hearing the tick in person (and then of course put it back to where it was). It would seem that my CCT is working properly for now, thanks for helping me out!

I'm also going to re-title my video so others can know what it's supposed to sound like when it's working properly.

So I was all excited to see what your trick was. I love magic!

But alas, I have heard the "tick" before too. I'm pretty sure its just the cam chain at startup, and then the CCT clicks over and tightens it up so I dont hear it anymore. Im not too worried at the moment. The bike isnt even broken in yet.

 

Yeah, they all make a little noise on startup. Believe me, if it fails, you will hear alot more noise around 3000 to 4000 RPM.

 

I have a 2014 (made in 2013) fz09 with just under 5k miles. Definitely hearing a tick. My bike has a loud tranny when in neutral with the lever out, but there is a definite separate ticking noise that speeds up and slows down with the engine revs. Easiest to hear when downshifting and coming off the throttle but also when idling. I got a great warranty from the dealer when I purchased so I'm taking the bike in tonight to have it checked out. Will update

 

update:

The service guy was nice enough to check out the bike without charging me, but predictably he doesn't believe it's anything worthy of note. My bike quiets down when the oil reaches 180 degrees. He said if that's how it sounds when it's hot I should just enjoy the bike. I will probably just order the APE CCT rather than wait for the noise to persist at all times.

^^ lol. I'd just put an APE in. I'm just about there as mine is fine...but I can't fault you for going Suzuki...I did. But I'll keep the Yammie around for a little while.

Wow, so glad I found this thread! I bought my bike used, with just over 1,800 miles on it a few weeks ago, and ever since buying, this loud ticking noise has been bothering the crap out of me. I kept hearing it, and thinking 'man, I do not know this engine very well so this must just be a normal noise coming from the valve train', or something like that. My bike does have the 5 yr warranty, so going to swing by the dealership and let them have a listen. See if I can't get them to replace with at least the upgrade p/n. Will make me feel better about it, if nothing else. I'm going to try and video mine tonight for confirmation from some on this thread that I def have this issue.

 

That sounds nice and clean to me! Would hear a very distinctive tick, especially when revving it a little.
