How to install APE CCT.

There's is probably more than one way to install your APE CCT but this is the way I think it would be the safest to get the job done.

First thing to do is to unwrap your APE CCT and make sure the adjuster goes in and out freely (4mm allen). Then unwind the adjuster all the way to allow it to go in the engine and clear the frame.

1. Remove the LH side engine case cap using a 14mm allen socket (same as front wheel) and remove the 6mm bolt with a 5mm allen. A 19mm socket is required to turn the engine over CCW. Turn until the timing marks line up inside the small hole

2. Use some tape to protect the frame over the CCT. First remove the inner bolt, toward the middle of the engine.

3. Here I will suggest you to go an extra step. Removing the RH side cover will make sure the chain doesn't skip a tooth and it will make it much easier to adjust the chain. I use my plier and some duct tape on the tip of the pliers to gently wedge between the engine case and the CCT slider.

4. You can now remove the last bolt from the CCT.

Marthy, thank you for the excellent write up. Just installed the APE tensioner. Hardest part was just getting out the old adjuster holding screws! Everything else was very simple. Thanks again!

I make a big deal out of everything but Marthys excellent directions made the APE CCT changeover easy.
Also, thanks to dcpppf I was cautious removing the cover so the pin holding the chain guide stayed in place.
In fact I was concerned enough to keep the pin in place I drilled a hole in a washer to hold it while I fiddled with the tension.
Thank you Marthy and everyone else that shared their experiences on this mod.
I also want to wag my finger at Yamaha for putting such a crappy CCT in an otherwise amazing engine. I still consider myself a "Yamaha Guy" and I sure hope they can come up with something better pretty soon. Most of us on this forum like to tinker, own a few tools and enjoy making stuff better but the vast majority of consumers are going to be busting balls at the dealership until Yamaha gets this right.

Bought my Ape on Ebay. Shipping cost was a bit on the high side but this wasn't something I felt comfortable waiting for which equated to a Starbucks Id do without. It was already long overdue & Now I'm as happy as a pig in sh#.

If I could Broker a deal for Ape to become Yammy's sole resource for CCT's there'd be Free Ape CCT's for everyone on the forum!:D

Installed this morning and wow, did not realize the stock one was making so much noise.

Very clear instructions, even the feedback was helpful. Definitely worth doing it, thanks Marthy.

Dealership is fine. Its like $12.00 or so. Won't save a lot going somewhere else. Most than likely you should be able to save it... but it's safe to have one in case the old gasket break.

Question... In the past when I've changed out cct's I've snugged up the plunger against the chain ... then started the bike and if it rattled I snugged it up until it stopped rattling then a quarter turn more.. if the chain whined after changing the cct I knew the chain was too tight... so I backed off the cct until it rattled and snugged it up plus a quarter after the noise stopped... will this procedure not work for the 09?

that should be fine. the thread pitch on the ape pro tensioners is finer than on their non-pro tensioners, so another quarter turn past where the chain stops rattling won't be too much.

i'd advise setting final tension with the engine fully warmed up (e.g. after you're done riding). engine will be a little noisier when cold, but that's okay.

you can dab a little white paint on the adjuster for visual reference and try different adjustment techniques and see where you end up with them. i consider the point at which the adjuster cannot be finger tightened (no tools) any further with the engine idling to be the absolute upper limit of adjustment - where you end up should not be past this point. it's nearly impossible to put dangerously high tension on the chain with just your fingers, but very easy with the leverage of an allen key.

I have a question, is there enough clearance between the frame and the engine for the old cct to come out and new one to go in? And the other thing is I called APE and asked them if the oil passage is getting blocked off from the cct and they told me that is not. Is that true? And if it is how would I block it?

Yes there is enough clearance to do the work (although it is very tight like others have mentioned), and see post #18 in regards to oil passage being blocked.

at what mileage did this become an issue? im just over 2100 and no cam chain noise to speak of (knocks on wood)?

I should clarify that the response did not come from APE. It was a response from a re-seller of their Manual CCT. I did not trust that advice either. That's why I was hoping for Marthy and/or APE to reply.

Hey!

What I was told is the size and length of the shank that goes inside the engine is long and big enough to block the oil passage... All I can say is I got 10K miles out of mine, including 3 track days. The chain doesn't do any noise and I haven't touch the adjuster at all since the install. I don't see any point of adjusting it until is start to make some noise again...

I think there's plenty of CCT out there with lots of mile put on that if there was any issue it would have pop out somewhere... just like the OEM's :)

Pardon my ignorance on the subject...but does installing the APE CCT "fixes" the noisy CCT issue seen on a lot of FZ09? What is the true benifit of using this?

Yes it fix the noise. The oem use oil pressure to adjust itself with some sort or ratchet mechanism. The APE is 100% mechanical and you need to reajust it if necessary. The good thing is... it doesn't desajust itself either like the oem.
