Hi guys,

I stuck my finger (here come the jokes) in the exhaust tonight. My finger came out black. I've also noticed black drops at the exhaust tip almost looks like splashed grease. Is this just soot and condensation? Anyone else noticed this? Go stick your fingers in!

Like others have said, its carbon and moisture. H2O is actually a bi-product when gasoline is burned. This and the condensation on the inside of a cold exhaust (smoking exhaust on start up, thats mostly wator vapor) are what make for the moisture. Carbureted bikes usually have a choke that when engaged, chock off air from the engine making it run rich. This allows the engine to warm up faster. Same principle with fuel injected engines but its done automatically. When the engine runs rich, you'll get a lot of carbon deposits. Combine the water and carbon and you get what you described.

i've riden it normally since i got it.
I agree that water is a by product - that doesn't concern me. The black heavy soot is a product of incomplete combustion or oil blowing by the valve seats.

There are three CBR 600RR's at our house, two of which do track duty........the fan turns on at approx. 221 -223 degrees on all three of them. That kind of number is pretty normal.

My bikes live outside under covers when not being ridden. In the morning, they've all always spit a little water out the exhaust at 1st when warming up. The FZ-09's no different. The condensation is just taking some exhaust soot with it and making itself more noticeable in the form of spots around the exhaust outlet. I wouldn't give it a second thought.

+1... 'sactly. Truly not an issue. My bikes all live inside when not being ridden, and even they all do it to one degree or another right after a cold start. I think the exhaust outlet design on the 09 just makes it a little more noticeable because of the way the outlet collar catches the moisture/soot combo on the way out.

If we were seeing that kind of thing after the engine & exhaust are fully warmed up, then we'd be looking at a real problem.
