2021 MT09 Radiator fan not spinning (Overheating)

I went to warm up my bike when I got home to go for a short ride. I decided to let the bike idle for 10-15 while I go change into gear. I walk back into the garage and the bike reads at 244 F (117 C) and the red light came on showing it was overheating. I noticed my radiator fan was not spinning at all. The only thing I disconnected was my O2 sensor for my exhaust last night. I tried to manually spin the fan and it felt quite stiff (it still spins though) . A new fan assembly is $230 USD facepalm. Would it be okay to ride without the fan? I can see this being an issue when its 90 degrees in traffic. I still rode it today, when I was riding my bike was reading about 170F-180F while moving. But when stopped for a few mins it went up to 222F.

I planned on trailering my bike to Deals Gap on Sunday now Im not so sure.Im sure I can ride it but I shouldnt let my bike idle ever again until I purchase a new fan I guess.

There is always something has to pop up.

If anyone is selling their radiator fan for a 2021+ MT09 please let me know Ill gladly purchase it off of you!

Before you replace the fan, make sure that this is indeed the culprit.
Was it working before?
If yes ,then I find it extremely unlikely for it to broke.
My suggestion is to go to a dealer to have the bike plugged as the O2 sensor affects more things than you can imagine. At least at these euro 5 bikes.
Also, warranty? If the fan is indeed broken then they should change it.
Don't let the bike get too hot again.117C is a lot.Hitting that temperature again could create serious issues.

I did shut the bike off as soon as it happened when I went to go sit on the bike. I let it cool down for a few mins and went out to ride it. I will reattach the harness and see if the fan will spin. It has been working before but usually it hasn’t gotten that hot until now due to warmer weather.

IMHO don't risk again to try it.Go to a dealer.
The fan starts at 106.If it doesn't even if you immediately switch it off, since the bike is not moving heat builds up and temperature will increase a bit more.So you'll hit 110 oC again.

This has never happened!! Haha
my local “master tech”is a master dumb-****. There is people in places that have no idea what they are doing and still able to Fake it till you make it.. scary place we live in if we don’t stay vigilant!!
I’d rather drive 1 hours for a real mofo to see my Moto’s.

Why start tearing sh&t down when you have a warranty?

I used to race. Built my own engines, did chassis mods, rebuilt my shocks, so I feel fairly competent with wrenches. That said, when I buy a brand new bike and sh&t isn't working right, the dealer is there to make it right. That's their job as representative of Yamaha (or whatever brand). Even if I could possibly fix it faster.

Im sure the temp sensor is fine if it’s reading on the dash.

Could be a relay or fuse or the 02 sensor is getting the computer confused and is not finding the conditions to run the fan.

Maybe the fan is caput, you can try applying 12v to it.

I would have the dealer check it out for sure since it’s warranty.

Vcyclenut can tune the ecu to run the fans at 195 instead of 220 which I plan on doing with him soon. This bike gets warm quick, unless Im just fat. Of course do that after you get this sorted and you get the ECU recall flash (it will overwrite any tune)

Yes! the metal flange thing on the radiator was blocking the fan from spinning, I guess when I was installing an exhaust I bent it just a bit for it to block the fan. I didnt know that the circle around the blades spun as well, I thought only the blades spun.
