I fitted some new Dulop Sportsmarts and 90 degree valves today, and covered the orange rim stripes with black ones. :icon_thumleft:

While I was at it I had a better look at this ring...it seems completely pointless to me. Does anyone know why I shouldn't lose another 150 gms from the back wheel?

The parts catalog calls it a bracket.I think it purpose is to help keep the chain from getting caught up if the chain comes off

Yup, my old xj is without that ring. The po must have lost the chain, the nuts are all rounded and chewed up.

Yep, if the chain comes off and wedges between the wheel and the swingarm the back wheel will lock up and cause a nasty crash.
The R Nicky Mouse YouTube channel has a few examples of what happens when you throw a chain and it's quite ugly when that happens.
