With 2,500 miles on my new MT09 when riding in the lower gears at a steady rpm I get engine surging (not related to drivetrain lash). This occurs mostly when the air temperature is above 75 degrees. Having experienced this with other bikes with O2 sensors I am certain that it is just running too lean. It occurs most often when trying to maintain a steady rpm with the throttle is near the edge of being on or off. My Fjr1300 had a slight surge at cruising speed which was eliminated when I installed a PowerCommander. I am hoping I don’t have to go that route.

Any ideas on how to reduce this annoyance? At times it feels like the engine is on the verge of misfiring. Has anyone experimented with changing the spark plug gap to see if this will reduce the effect?
