On recommendation of a friend, I bought a cheap manual cam chain tensioner from Amazon. It was simple enough to install and seems to do the job just fine. The question I have, is: does the oil passage matter? I’ve read things about plugging it and I’ve read install instructions that don’t mention it at all. Do I need to be concerned about oil pressure or is it a small enough passage that it really won’t matter. Thanks in advance!

No, it does not matter, no hydraulics are involved!

In production 2017 Yamaha ran an oil supply to feed the tensioner for lubrication, they changes one of the head cover bolts to incorporate a oil feed from the cam cap to the tensioner, Bulletin M2016-004 was issued for 2013 to 2016 models to update them.

I personally would never install a manual tensioner due to a chain does stretch over time & you are adjusting it to the tight spot, a adjustable tensioner can apply load to the chain in the tight & lose spots.
