I bought one of these earlier this year and have been very happy with it; it works on both 120 volt house current and 12 volt power off your car battery. The air chuck is small enough that it doesn't interfere with brake rotors much either. I paid around $50 for mine but now it's on sale for $10 off. Today (December 1st) they're offering free shipping too:

A couple years ago I picked up a generic 12V battery booster pack from Costco that had a built in air pump. The was using it as a backup battery supply for camping. It worked ok for filling up a low tire in a pinch. But then one day I used it to top up the bikes tires, instead of dragging out the bigger air compressor or taking forever with the bicycle pump. That's when I found it's perfect use as a quick mobile air pump for the motorcycles or mountain bikes. Being a booster pack, the battery charge last forever when you just use the compressor.
