Since the power will be restricted the engine output doesn't matter a whole lot right now.

I own both. The 07 is less top heavy and noticably more nimble around town and in tight spots.

Love the top end rush and roomy ergos of my 09, but prefer the light, nimble handling of the 07. So, if power were equal, I'd choose an 07 if I fit on one comfortably.

Stock suspension and brakes on both models are pretty much equal between the two, so nothing to consider there.

The 07 gets another 10mpg for me.
07 = 52-56mpg
09= 42-45mpg

07 gets roughly 25% better fuel economy.

That's a new one on me, a restricted MT09 with 35kw? That would be like sex with a supermodel while wearing a dozen condoms.

Interesting! I hadn’t heard of power being restricted based on license type before. Here in BC Canada, you can ride whatever you want when you feel you’re ready (which has its drawbacks too). That said, licenses here can have engine CC size restrictions depending on what CC of bike you choose to use for your road test(s).

Anyways… I took riding lessons at a fantastic local riding school and learned on a Kawasaki KLX 250 (I think). My first bike was/is a 2015 Ducati Scrambler Full Throttle (now had for 3+ years and 22,000+ km). Ordered a 2023 MT-09 SP for my next bike (expected to ship in April). So I’m stoked!

As for yourself, at 18 the next bike you get probably won’t be your last. If the MT-07 and MT-09 have similar power available due to local licensing restrictions, you may be better off with the MT-07 for the greater fuel economy then a couple years or more down the road sell it and upgrade to the MT-09 (or whenever your license will allow you to ride it unrestricted). Just my thoughts on that.

Then again, if budget isn’t a concern then go with your gut and get whatever will make you happiest!

I can't undertand a single word you said. Reminds me of the opening credits to Monte Python's "The Holy Grail"

So based on Shinyrib's logic, if you don't mind taking a hit on the in / out buy / sell on the 07, the choice seems obvious for now. Get the 07. But if money matters and if you're going to get the 09 fairly soon anyway, I'd say get the 09 now. IMO.

Or maybe get a dual-purpose bike and take it out in the dirt and get really good at sliding around. There may come a time when you're glad you did. And you'll have a ton of fun doing it.
Or maybe a smaller step up like a Kawasaki Z-400 (or a Ninja 400 if you don't mind the riding position).

That's great, I gues

Bully for you. A year on a motorized bicycle and a little less than a work week's worth of instruction: guess you are an expert now, eh.
Hey I never said I was an expert, that is why I am asking on this forum. Do not really understand the attitude I am getting

Jakub, congrats on studying abroad.

I understand the dilemma, both bikes are very close in weight. The CP2 engine in the MT7 is a hoot, it’ll run about 75HP fully uncorked. If we look at the electronics package the 9 wins hands down.

I’d say go MT9, deal with the euro neutering for a bit and not have to take a hit on a bike swap later. You’ll be fine with the power and weight of the 9, as you’ve got instruction and a full year of riding. You already know riding safe means always staying in the moment, a zen type of deal where you mind never drifts away from the ride control.

One more bit of advice from an old codger, get good gear - don‘t skimp on a helmet. I love a Shoei for my bulbous head.

Have fun and be safe.
Appreciate it! I bought gloves, an mc-jacket with full protection and a good helmet the same day I bought the bike, so I am prepared for an eventual slip-up.
