Hello everyone!

I am currently 17 and have been riding a Yamaha MT-125 (A1 license) for 1 year, and I am looking to upgrade to an A2 bike this summer since I turn 18. I am debating between the MT-07 and the MT-09. Both would be restricted to 35KW, but I have heard that the MT-09 would have more torque. If I would decide to get the A license later in my life, meaning I can ride all bike categories, I would not need to buy a new bike, but would instead unrestrict the MT 09. Being so young, I wonder if the MT 09 is not overkill for me. But since they are almost the same price and would have the same engine effect(35 KW), I currently prefer the MT09. The sound is also lovely, and it's my dream bike:love:, so getting it at 18 would be a dream come true. Not wanting to get myself killed, I just wanted to ask for opinions from people with experience.
I appreciate any input you can provide.

Assuming you are a safe rider and its restricted like you said, I'd go with the MT-09. Here in the states, we arent restricted by power based on years of experience like the European countries. However, my first bike was a Svartpilen 401 which i outgrew in less than 8 months and put 5000 miles on it. I moved up to the MT-09 because i wanted a larger displacement bike that i would love and grow into. I was afraid at first but after riding it a couple days i realized it was totally manageable coming from a 400cc bike. What i learned is that its about confidence. I've only been riding two years and over 15,000 miles to give you some perspective. With that being said, if you are worried, the MT-07 is a fantastic bike too. But you said it yourself, the MT-09 is your dream bike, why not fulfill that dream. Just don't do hooligan sh*t lol

That’s the limited production model that is 800cc, but let’s you toggle between 2-cyl and 3-cyl ( less or more power ), depending on your riding level of experience…🤥

But seriously, we just had a poster post an identical question - start off with a smaller or bigger bike, and the answers were 50-50 or maybe 60-40 - smaller to bigger respectively. In the end you’ll just have to look at the pros and cons and go plunk down the cash on your new bike purchase.

The most important thing for you is to get some professional instruction in the art of motorcycling, if you haven't already; and if you have get more. As far as -07 vs -09 , they weigh just about the same, better tech on the -09...not a hard choice

I had 30 hours of professional guidance before I got my licence, so I am ready to claim that I have been thought more that just the basics when it comes to riding. I have also been riding an Mt-125 for a year already

Bully for you. A year on a motorized bicycle and a little less than a work week's worth of instruction: guess you are an expert now, eh.

Jakub, congrats on studying abroad.

I understand the dilemma, both bikes are very close in weight. The CP2 engine in the MT7 is a hoot, it’ll run about 75HP fully uncorked. If we look at the electronics package the 9 wins hands down.

I’d say go MT9, deal with the euro neutering for a bit and not have to take a hit on a bike swap later. You’ll be fine with the power and weight of the 9, as you’ve got instruction and a full year of riding. You already know riding safe means always staying in the moment, a zen type of deal where you mind never drifts away from the ride control.

One more bit of advice from an old codger, get good gear - don‘t skimp on a helmet. I love a Shoei for my bulbous head.

Have fun and be safe.
