Lowside crash repair log:

I had a whoopsie this weekend that did a bit of damage to the FZ and my riding gear. Here’s a follow up on what needed to be repaired and the associated cost for those curious. I know I would want to read about this if it happened to me, so my misery is your entertainment lol.

Based on the data logs, I lost it in T6 at NCBIKE while giving it the beans at the top of 2nd gear. Looks like my crappy body position meant I was leaning the bike too far, which dragged the stator case. This lifted the rear, and out she went. My airbag deployed and I slid for quite a way into the nearby field. There were about 3 small holes in my suit, but nothing serious. The gear served its purpose. 👍

The bike faired a bit worse. Once the bike hit the grass, it looks like the bars took a good hit which sent them into the fuel tank. Either the frame sliders or the bars flipped the bike over onto the right side and slammed the bars into the tank there as well.

Since I need to get this bike back together for another track event next week, I went with an OEM tank and misc tank parts.

Not pictured here are a few other things I needed to replaced. My Galespeed VRC needed a replacement reservoir nipple, but happened to find in the original box a larger one that came with it. I’ll make that work for the time being.

Check out the factory fresh tank. 🤤
We got a replacement rizoma bar, new grips, new Ti caliper bolts for safety wiring, CRG clutch lever, and some shorter replacement speed bleeders.

I’ll get some more pics once I get parts coming off the bike.

Glad to hear you're alright (not so much the wallet). Also good it wasn't serious enough to cause engine damage.

I don't know if I'm out of the woods on that part just yet.
When I got back to the paddock, the bike started up just fine and puffed some oil smoke out the exhaust.
This may be expected since it was on it's side idling for a little.

On this note, I noticed my tip-over sensor didn't kill the ignition. I'm going to have to look into that.

@vcyclenut , Have you heard about anything ECU flash related that might disable the tip-over sensor by chance? Like anything to do with the quick shifter maybe. Just a thought.
How did you get a new tank so quickly?

Sorry to hear about this. At least you can put the bike back together. It doesn't take much for them to be totaled. Can you reuse the airbag?

do you have the old style ftecu quick shifter that plugs into the tip over switch? I was told they still work like that but never have really tested

Woolich race tools, actually. So maybe not that.

Got the tank from partzilla. I was surprised it shipped so fast too.
Between them and yamaha parts house, I've had some pretty good customer experiences.

Yep, I have a new cartridge of CO2 going in.
I'd recommend everyone ride with this system or something similar.
Turned a high speed crash almost fun. But it could have easily been much worse.

What airbag sys do you have? And do you recommend it?
I can’t tell from the picture but Is the tank painted, primered, or bare metal?? It looks to be painted silver? That’s not a bad price for it especially if its painted, that’s about what they go for on eBay all smashed up.
I go for painted🧐. Took a look myself and used fuel tanks are not cheap! The clutch lever and Stahlbus Bleeders 😱

It’s no silver tank I’ve ever seen in person of an FZ. I think it’s the primer used for silver/grey painted bikes. In the product description it said “suitable for matte silver.”

Part # 1RC-24110-01-P5

It honestly looks like the silver you see on the new Ducati’s.

This morning I also ordered a set of tank sliders that @Camp49 put on his bike. I think they just look really cool. When I get them I’ll post a pic.

Yeah, it's probably that then.
I've never seen one in person. It's really bright.
I think it's going to look sharp next to the all the black and carbon fiber accents I've got going on.

That looks like the same matt silver that's on my 2016 FZ07!

It kinda looks like the brushed aluminum color on the R1M. I like it actually. My bike is red so i would have to get it painted but the price is great, less than i would expect for a new one considering what old damaged ones go for

This was my reasoning.
Whenever I looked up prices for used tanks, they're all $4-500 and come pre-dented. So it's like; what's the point?
Another friend of mine who crashed in front of me on his 2023 BMW S1000RR needed a new tank on his. $1,000 for a used one. Crazy what these things go for.

This morning I repacked my airbag system. The process is really simple. Thread in a bolt to drawback the firing pin, then set the ball in place so it’s semi-captive in the socket. Whole process takes seconds.
(The cartridge shown is the spent one. Once the firing pin is set, slide down the red safety then thread in your new cartridge.)
