FZ-10 Tank on an FZ-09?

Hey everyone new member here! Currently debating the FZ-09 to replace my 2015 CBR600RR. It just isn't comfortable to ride for longer distances. The only thing stopping me from picking up am FZ-09 tomorrow is the fuel tank size. WTH yamaha?!

I don't want to carry extra fuel around with me, so with that being said does anyone know if the fuel tank for the FZ-10 would fit an FZ-09? Being 17 liters it would be perfect! All I want is to be able to hit the 300 km mark without having to refill in between.

Thanks!

The FZ-09 Tracer tank is 17L ...and that is built to work with this motor, so is more likely to fit than the FZ-10 (although I haven't heard of anyone doing the swap...so it may not be simple).

One member here on the forum has started an FJ swap, but I think it ended up being more than he bargained for and he has shelved the project to focus on life stuff. There are a fair number of us waiting for someone to document their endeavor to be the first.

Thanks guys, just looked at that thread. Not sure why they wouldn't just put the 17L on from the factory. This would literally be the perfect bike if they did!

I was more so thinking of being able to ride 300 kms and then having to look for gas, instead of 250 kms. I'm going on a 3500 km ride with other bikes that have a range of 350-400 kms, so it would be kind of a pain to have to stop that much sooner than they would. Even my CBR can hit 350+ if I'm easy on it. Typically I use 14.5 liters of fuel to ride 300-310 kms on it. It's got a 17 liter tank so it's perfect, just not comfortable over a longer duration.

When you get over 300 kms on a long trip how much fuel is left in the reserve?

In city riding I have gotten 40 ks on f trip.
If it's a 14L tank, and I've gotten 160ks out of 7L, then at least 320ks.

I have ridden 1600+ks from Sydney to Phillip island on my gsxr711 that only got 180ks out of 17L, maybe 200ks to bone dry.
Short, high speed hops are fun.

You might want to look at the FJ-09 if you are going to do a lot of highway tours. That 17L larger tank, better wind protection, ABS & TCS and still a great bike. My brother loves his Fj-09 and still goes like a mad man in the twisties, lol.

By the time you finish messing around making a bigger tank for an FZ-09, it might look and handle like a piece of crap???

Like this, sure it works, but it has that Frankenstein, or FrankenBike look to it, lol.

P.S. - I guess you could paint the added section to look like a tank bag???? lol

I'm not a fan of the FJ, it just doesn't look as sporty.

I don't do a ton of long rides, most times I fill up around 260-290 kms on a tank.

Do any of you guys know if the tank takes 14 liters and then as the 2.8 reserve? Or is that reserve included when they say 14L?

I just ran my tank dry, which I have never done before and won't do that again. I brought spare gas. From a full tank, I was able to go 170 miles to empty. This was achieved going an average of 65 MPH cruising on open roads with an extra 60 pounds of gear in my top-case in A mode.

Thanks for your help everyone. I think I've decided against the FZ-09 though. I had convinced myself that I could deal with the gas range, but one think I just thought about and looked into was getting blown around on the road by wind.

I had a Ninja 300 before my CBR600RR and that thing got blown around pretty easily. The CBR feels way more planted, and I hardly notice a heavy wind when I'm on it. From what I've read the FX-09 would probably be just as bad or maybe worse than the Ninja was, and battling wind isn't all that fun for me.

Thanks again!

The major issues of windblast with the small ninjas is the fact that they are relatively light, have massive fairing that doesn't allow the windblast to filter through the bike, and they're on tiny tires that are super light and have very little gyroscopic effect.

I used to get tossed around on the highway on my ninja250 when i was passing trucks or trucks were passing me. Compared to the ninja250? the FZ-09 is glued to the road.

Stock tank will get me 150 miles.

I abandoned the FJ swap. If anyone is interested in picking it up to work on it, I will pass it along for $200 for all I have for it (side plates, air scoops, FJ tank etc)

I actually don't find the seat terrible. It's not real comfy either. I've put 700 kms it in a day. Many 500 km days.

Also, as far as the filler neck mod, you can get more gas in there without doing it, it'll just take more time to fill it up. I've squeezed 14.6 litres in there once, so even if I had 400 ml of gas left, that's 15 litres capacity. No filler neck mod on mine.

I never get off the bike to fill it up. I hate it when I can't pay at the pump, because then I can't fill it up as much as I normally would be able to. Putting the bike on the side stand after squeezing all the fuel you can in there will guarantee a puddle of gas on the ground.

This may not help much but here goes anyway.. I had fz09 and thought it seemed like I was filling up all the time watching my mileage (like 130 max to a tank). Went and bought an FJ09 for touring and loved it (close to 200 on a tank). Now I have an FZ10 and am getting 125 to a tank. I understand the FZ enjoyment over the FJ but it is still very much the same bike with some tweeks worked out. I would think that just because you are even tracking you mileage that the fz09 wouldn't be a wise choice. However it's a blast and a great bike so go for it but you will never see 180 miles a tank on it I feel.

Did 453 miles yesterday (729) kilometers. Yes I was pretty tired.

Burned 9.89 gallons for an average of 45.8 miles per gallon.

That equates to a range of 160 miles, if you are really brave, (257) kilometers on 3.5 gallons with a .2 gallon reserve.

The first leg of yesterdays mission I went 141 miles (227) kilometers and burned 3.08 gallons. That's right at 46 mpg while cruising at 75 to 80 mph.

I agree a slightly bigger tank would be nice and so would an additional 40 horse power plus a hover kit too.

If you are worried about running out of fuel, you can always pack one of these along.

It also depends how you ride the bike. If you are heavy on the throttle all the time and expect to go about 300 km's (185 miles), good luck with that. There are other factors you need to take into account, like where you will be riding, the weather, even how big you are. Lets face it a 125 lb guy is going to get better fuel mileage on the same bike as a 300 lb guy, lol.

If you take it easy on any bike, you will get better fuel mileage, which might explain how some of these people are reporting over 44 mpg????
