Copied and expanded upon from the build thread...

In between playing around on the suspension, I set about fixing something that has irked me from day 1: that blasted horn. To my eyes, the placement is terrible and the gaudy silver ring doesn't do the front of the bike any favors. I was originally planning to design/fabricate/sell a simple kit to relocate this horn, and then I figured out an easier solution...

Original horn location:

So where does it go? Well, remove the LH scoop cover and you'll find a convenient void where something belongs:
Image

The factory horn bracket required NO modifications. Remove the horn and flat plate/bracket held to lower triple tree with one bolt (10 mm head). Remove bolt in scoop (also 10 mm head), install horn, tighten bolt.

Make yourself a ~19" jumper cable to extend the horn connections. Red ends are female, blue are male:

Route from scoop, through frame, back out of access alongside throttle cables. Run through both wire loops (you'll see them when you're looking) and connect behind headlight:

Remove original bracket which secured the horn and it's flat plate bracket to the lower triple. Add 2 10mm washers (SS so as not to rust) under the headlight bracket to make up the original thickness, reinstall bolt and voila!

So if you don't have the wire and connectors laying around, you'll be in ~$5 to your local hardware store and 20 minutes of your time. Really cleans up the front of the bike. Sometimes what you can't see is more important than what you can...

Someone asked how I relocated the horn without using any additional wire...

I just unhooked the existing wire and ran it around the left side of the bike. I used a cable tie to keep the horn wire from getting anywhere it might get pinched, and then I slipped the cables in the top of the ram scoop housing. Hopefully the pictures help describe this better than me!

I did my horn relocation the same way. The only problem is that the horn in the inclosed area is not very loud any more. Not that it was very loud to start with, but it definitely looks a lot better and it's out of the way when using a Pit Bull front stand (headlift). It would be nice to find a louder horn that would fit in that area and get others attention. Definitely interested in any feed back on any after market horns that work in this area?

Huge thanks to BMcEL for testing the horn relocation with a dB meter: zero reduction in volume!

"I've heard complaints that the horn is not as loud in this location so I took some readings before and after with a dB meter from work. My readings indicated zero reduction in volume between the stock location and the new location, testing from multiple points around the bike approximately 15' away. To me it didn't sound any quieter either."

Was that relocated with or without cutting out the panel shown in my post in this thread dated 02-23-2014, 08:13 PM ?
If not, I wonder if there's any difference with the cut?
Part removed from inside the scoop:

I relocated my horn when I first got the bike...well as soon as Nick posted the quick fix. Recently while I was checking the bike's functionality I noticed that my horn wire had decided to position itself between my fork stop, and my frame mounted stop and was getting squished every time I turned the handlebars all the way. It's probably a rookie mistake on my part but it's definitely something to look out for when doing this modification!

Thank you for these directions Stoltec Moto! I went to put my FZ09 on the triple tree stand only to realize that the stupid horn was in the way. I figured there had to be a better place to fit the horn to so that I wouldn't have to remove it and put it back on every time I put the front end on the stand (which I like to do for cleanings.)

I was able to reroute my factory wiring to get it mounted however I'm going to use your advice make some extension cables, but the reroute worked as a temp solution. The clean up will be a winter job. Thanks again!

I did notice that the sound was a little more muffled sounding than being mounted up front, but I'm okay with that.

I cut a small opening in the plastic after seeing it suggested earlier in this thread.
Sounds pretty normal now.

I relocated my horn today with the factory wires only.
I was able to route it down with the clutch cable, and then with the throttle cables through the frame, and come out just behind the horn. There is plenty of length from the factory if you're willing to get a bit messy.
To do so, I cut the large jacket off (from switch to under the cluster) to separate the horn wire from the rest, and taped them back up with electrical tape for now.
Not the prettiest job, but it'll do for moment. I'll clean it up at some point in the neat future.
