I'm starting a cross country ride next week that will take me from PHX, AZ to the South (TN/GA) and then up to Virginia to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway. I just got out of the Army and wanted to ride across America and see what this country has to offer. Most people want to go to Europe, Asia, etc. However, I believe America has so much beauty its insane. I really started to get the itch when I took my wife and kids to the Grand Canyon in February. It solidified that I should chuck it and ride. I was originally going to do the 50CC; San Diego to Jacksonville but that didn't work out because I wanted to see more of my friends along the way. Research on touring, bike setup, etc. was done with the intent of doing the Iron Butt run, reading the advice on here, and talking to people who have already done long rides.

I have relatives in Atlanta and friends in TN, north GA, South Carolina, etc. so I figured if I was on that side of the country lets do the following:
Dragons Tail and Cherohala PKWY. Once I began reading, mapping, planning I found this site:
http://smokymountainrider.com/1000-mile-motorcycle-ride/
this is my new plan.

The shameless plug for products:
Seat: Airhawk2 airpad.
Before everyone gets all Minnie Driver on me let me explain. I tried to get my seat done by Verne but he is ill. I then tried Laam and we all know he was busy. I wasn't willing to dump a ton of money into something I may not like especially if it was for a long distance ride. I have taken this out and have ridden near 400 miles without being super super sore.
Saddlebags: Motocentric. This really came down to being the cheapest with the same capacity as Cortech et al. I also had an early Fathers day gift card.
Hawaiian Tropics SPF 50 for my complexion. I tried to find ****** 5000 but they were sold out.

Riding gear:
I am planning on layering when needed. Rain gear bought (stationed in Hawaii for 3 years), pants, boots, Hawaiian shirt, and Shemagh for neck protection. I also have high vis gear.

Bags:
I am putting change of clothes, shoes, on the left side and emergency kit stuff on the right. I have a jump bag that will host my maps, water source, GOPRO, and camera.

Bike Prep:
New oil, drain plug (see what I did there?), filter, washed, lubed.

Finally, I have tested all the packing and riding a few times and have adjusted weight, gear, clothing accordingly.

I was unsure whether I should type in Serif or Sans Serif.

I plan on keeping this updated throughout the ride.

Suggestions, Comments, etc.

No apologies for the Air Hawk needed. It's the best a rider can sit on. IMO You'll make good time on the interstates ala Iron Butt but the real America is on the blue highways. Have fun.

I'd join you for a few miles on the 27th, but that is Engagement Party Weekend for our daughter. Where are you staying that weekend? Do keep posting and perhaps I can catch up on the 29th and buy you lunch. What the hell is the Gauntlet 6 Gap? Richard Russell Scenic Highway/180/129?

I-40 to Knoxville? From way out West? That would be a tough trip for me in a Honda Accord!
This just proves the US Military creates some tough ass people.
I too am curious about this mystical "Gauntlet 6 Gap" you speak of.

Shamrock-it is all about perspective. And I think Vets are great for endurance. We have 24 hour duty where you sit at a desk for 24 hours to make sure nothing happens to whatever it is you're watching, then multiple training exercises, and the constant high operational tempo...That's why I think this is doable.
