so as of yesterday i have been hearing a ticking noise from my bike i can hear it when its just idling and its much louder when the engine is under a load i can hear it best on the right side and not sure what it is i took it to the dealer and had them look at it but the old guy could not hear it at idle and thought i was talking about the clutch basket which is not the noise i hear then he tells me its probably a loose valve which is good for more power so they said just ride it but it does not sound normal to me its really irritating when im accelarating what do you guys think , i know i can be a little weird about noises i think one small tick and its going to fall apart but it dosent sound right to me :confused:

the service guy said it wouldnt be worth it to do that right now because in anohter 1500 miles i can do it and they wouldnt be able to get it closer or something i dont know a ton about internal engine stuff so i just said ok haha or maybe that was for the tb sync thing

Valve or camchain noise won't get louder under load, would have to be something from the piston down. Could it be an exhaust leak at the header? That would do what you are describing. To check, stick a hose in your ear and hold it near the header pipes at the head, like a stethoscope.

You might be onto something with the exhaust leak, that's exactly what one sounds like. Or if the bike has an Air Injection System (AIS), a leak in that system on the cylinder head will produce a similar ticking noise, that gets louder under load.

I also have a slight tick, I dont hear it at iddle though. Its usualy In 5th or 6th gear for some reason and its not all the time, just did first oil change at 592 miles. Will see if it goes away after some time, if not its going back to get checked out. Also great point with the fuel pumps I will try and locate a station with individual pumps and see if that helps.

If it's ticking under load, I would suspect con rod or wrist pin. Take a old piece of rubber heater hose and hold one end at the bottom of the motor oil pan area , an the other to your ear. Give the bike a few blips and see if you hear the noise more just at the start of the rev. I had a zx14 at one point 2200 miles started out as a slight tick , turned out to be the wrist pin, which in turn Farked the con rod and caused a big mess. Hopefully not.

That noise to me sounds like the cam chain. My guess is the tensioner is hung up and there is a bit of slack in the chain. Being that it is under warranty, the dealer should check it out and if I were you I would demand it The tensioners have a ratchet mechanism that sometimes hangs up.....it can usually be remedied by loosening the tensioner bolts a turn or so and tapping on it so it pops out. Tighten it back down and all is well. It could also just be a bad tensioner.

First post on the forum.
I live in Europe and got to try the Mt-09 which is the euro version of the FZ9, I got to ride one for a bit the other day.
I too noticed a ticking noise coming up through the gas tank, it happened while i was cruising in 6th speed.
The bike was basically new, it had around 200 kilometers on it and I recall the Yamaha dealer owner saying that he rode it rather energetically.
So i'm not sure if the break in was religiously respected and maybe the noise is valve train related.
I was planning on buying one of these bike but might actually wait a bit til all the everything gets sorted out.
I'm keeping in mind that this is a brand new engine from Yamaha that hasn't been used before any other of their bikes so it might have some conception issues that need to be panned out.

Also got it on mine. Break-in was done as per Yamaha owner manual recommendation + hard throttle and good usage of motor breaking power. Motor oil have been replace at 300 miles with Yamalube 10w-40. Few metals flake present in the recovery oil pan. The ticking is coming from upper right side of the engine. Run the bike on 91 octane premium gas since new. Motor cold or hot ticking is present. Bike have now 1,100 km (685 miles) Also notice what could look like a clutch bad bearing sounds on neutral, engine revving at idle and clutch fully release. Didn't notice it when the bike was brand new. Strange bike "small surge" when transmission is hot (250 miles ride) in 1st gear with clutch lever fully pulled and giving some small throttle wrist shot. It's like the clutch is not fully releasing the pressure on motor causing the bike to hesitate. Surge doesn't seem to be present on small ride. Did check the clutch adjustment and it is on the specs. It's my first bike, all this is maybe all good, will see but in the mean time I will probably take the 3 year extended warranty...

I really wouldn't worry too much about odd noises OR first year models either. If you look at my sig, you might notice that they are all first year model bikes - it's some kind of addiction I have. The only problem i had was with the bonneville clutch and a few other little parts. I suspect this bike will be good - Yamaha has made more than one engine before.

As part of the weight reduction process, all the castings have been thinned down as much as possible, which contributes to engine noise. It's why the gears make more noise when dialing on the throttle.
Clutch rattling in neutral is normal, usually it goes away when you pull the clutch in. It does on this bike too, but does seem to be replaced by a small noise from the release bearing. Nothing to worry about.

I must have glossed over the 91 octane fuel - that could be a problem. I hate forking over all that cash for fuel if it isn't needed. I'll try the next tank on mid-grade and see what happens. Don't worry, I know what pinging sounds like - I have a bonneville.

I suspect Yamaha is overstating the need for 91 octane.
I have a 2012 V-strom 650 that has a 3mm bigger bore and nearly the same 11.5:1 and it calls for 87 Octane
Yamaha calls for the WR250R also to run premium.
After break-in I too will try some 89 or 87
40 cent differnce between regular and premium.

I don't think that Yamaha will be releasing info on their new 3 banger engine for a while.
Maybe, if some of you guys know official Yamaha dealer mechanics you could ask them about the engine specs on this bikes engine (ie: timing, valving or YCC-T) they might be able to figure out where the problem is coming from.

I'm not sure if this would help but maybe those of you that actually own the bike :rolleyes: and that have a ticking noise could try this:
-While riding your FZ9 with high Octane fuel (91-93 RON), once you start to hear the ticking noise you should change between power modes(Standard, A and B)

Maybe the fuel mapping and timing while change between modes and it will stop or increase ticking.

I'm also kind of thinking gas doesn't have anything to do with the noise because the bike here was running on premium gas (which is like 98 RON versus 91-93 US gas, so basically race gas), so knock wouldn't be a concern.

Like RichBinAZ mentioned that if they've thinned down the casting walls inside the housing and engine as much as possible to save weight that that might have something to do with the extra noise resonance.

Does anyone know if the FZ9 has hydraulic valves or are they mechanical?

Also when you guys say that the noise is coming from the right side of the engine, is that when your sitting on it or facing it?
I'm assuming when you're sitting on it. Maybe you're hearing the camshaft gears or the oil pump which is located on the right side:

well I put the new gas in it and its still doing it haha Im going to try and locate the noise later today when im off work also it does seem much louder when its cold and at also at 4k rpm it gets REALLY loud and then at about 6k it goes away it almost sounds more like a knock at 4k its a little worrying but its hard to hear when its not moving but will see what happens
