    Big Problems (Advice needed)

I have a 2015 FZ 09 with 4203.03 miles. I was riding to work on the freeway at about 65 mph and the bike dies, like the key got turned off. I costed to the shoulder and shut the key off and then back on and hit the starter and nothing. I thought maybe the battery cable came loose. Pulled seat and it is tight. This bike is in showroom condition. Well I had to get it towed to the Yamaha shop and they just called me and said it looks like a bolt in the clutch assembly came loose and chewed up a ton of stuff. Long story short 825.00 in parts and 425.00 in labor to fix. I know my warranty is up, but this seems like a manufacturer defect. There is no maintenance to tighten bolts on clutch. So my question. Do you think I am screwed or should I contact Yamaha and try to get them to cover or maybe get an attorney. What should I do in your guys opinion.

Was there any noise before it died? Seems to me if it was a bolt you would have heard some kind of noise. I had a quad that died all of a sudden out of nowhere. It would fire but never turn over. It ended up being the stator I belive.

Unfortunately, if the warranty is over, whether it’s by a week or a decade, you’re SOL. What happens if the starter goes in an 8y old car? Same logic.
I mean, things go bad, machines aren’t perfect. If it happened to many there’d be a chance for a recall, but there isn’t one in this scenario, that I know of. I have a hard time finding a case for a lawyer here, and even if there was one, it would cost more than the repairs.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don’t see an option here.

A bolt coming loose in the clutch wouldn't shut the bike down causing it not to run.. warranty wont cover you and what parts did they replace?

Regardless, the bike is running now, the parts were replaced, looking forward and not back... don’t see much recourse

Oh, the price was a quote to fix, but it wasn’t done yet, my bad.

In that case, I’ll post some thoughts on what we know:

Normally the bike won’t start up in gear, the clutch must be pulled.
He mentioned “coasting” to a stop, so it didn’t die in a low gear, or he would have had more engine brake (OP verify)

So in theory, the original diagnosis could be correct.
Being stuck in a gear, due to a floating bolt in the clutch case/pack COULD prevent startup
The initial stall could have happened from multiple things.

You didn't say when you bought it, new or used, did you buy it from that dealer?

Before any work was performed, I would expect to see exactly what was damaged, even if I didn't know what I was looking at. I don't trust dealers, any type. Too many will give you a bullshyte story with a list of parts and labor costs hoping you won't have a looksee. This may not be the case but who knows.

I find it hard to believe that what was described wouldn't result in a complete teardown due to metal shavings everywhere in the engine. Just my .02
